Forklift Operation

by Amy Hall

Forklift operation should always be taken seriously, as any recklessness or carelessness on the operator's part can cause serious injury to people as well as damage to the machinery. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and construction regulations, employers have certain obligations to meet that will guarantee that the utmost safety precautions are taken when using a forklift, as well as forklift accessories.

It is important and necessary that all workers of such machinery are acquainted with the handling of this type of equipment. It is also necessary that workers are advised on the hazards associated with forklift operation. All workers should be instructed, informed, and supervised during operation in order to protect their safety and health.

Forklift Operation Should Be Taken Seriously

Any employer must be certain that the person assigned to operate the forklift is competent and qualified to do so. There are steps an employer can take to make sure that this obligation is fulfilled. Whenever a worker is going to be operating a forklift without direct supervision, certain procedures are necessary.

First, the worker must be informed of the hazards associated with operating a forklift. The worker should also know how to protect himself and others from these hazards. Finally, the worker should be able to demonstrate to a trained or experienced operator the skills and knowledge necessary to operate a forklift safely.
