Loading Dock Ramps

by Amy Hall

Loading dock ramps run the gamut, and range in size and weight capacity according to the purpose of their use. Typically, loading docks with capacities of 15,000 and 30,000 pounds are for sit-down rider type forklift trucks and other equally heavy powered equipment. These forklift ramps are generally used for shipping and receiving operations of companies that specialize in manufacturing, processing, and distribution.

Industrial ramps used for these purposes must meet certain standards, and are generally made out of high-quality steel. Steel is the strongest metal available, and it offers unparalleled durability and strength. Steel is water-resistant, and it will not bend, crack, buckle, warp, or chip, which makes it the perfect choice for loading dock ramps.

There are also ramps made for loading docks that are geared towards smaller capacities, such as 5,000 to 6,000 pounds. These ramps can accommodate hand carts, four-wheel carts, and pallet trucks. Capacities of 8,000 to 12,000 pounds are ideal for power pallet trucks, walkies, small straddle trucks, and smaller forklift trucks.

As you can imagine, there are a wide range of choices when it comes to picking out loading ramps. It is necessary that you know in advance what the maximum weight capacity will be before you purchase any ramp. Obviously, exceeding a ramps weight capacity could be not only hazardous but catastrophic if a person were to become injured while on the job.
