Black Dating

Written by Jeremy Horelick

The black dating scene can be just as exclusive as the Jewish, Latino, or Republican dating scenes (yes, they do allow Republicans to breed, for better or for worse). Visit any college campus and you'll find more than your fair share of black Greek organizations. There are black non-profits, mixers, and African-American Studies departments, so it only follows that the internet dating scene would have its own premier network.

Critics decry all minority dating services as inherently racist for excluding non-members of their communities. The only problem with this argument is that black dating organizations, like those of other minorities, do not bar others from joining. They merely acknowledge that people tend to seek mates of similar creeds, backgrounds, and nationalities (not to mention higher social classes).

The Controversy of Black Dating

Many members of black dating organizations find fault with the concept on wholly different grounds. They believe, and rightly so, that America has made giant strides since the days of the Brown decision and its abhorrent "separate but equal" clause. As with affirmative action, creating "otherness" perpetuates these differences. At the same time, however, we have an entire month (February) dedicated to celebrating black heritage. So where do we draw the line between pride in one's ancestry and exclusivity?

This question is way too thorny to resolve in a few short paragraphs. Suffice it to say, millions of black singles have had success placing EPersonals through services designed to target their specific needs and desires. Until someone finds fault with that overwhelming success, black internet dating services will surely continue to thrive.
