Russian Singles

Written by Jeremy Horelick

Russian singles are scattered throughout dozens of communities in major U.S. cities. Every big town from Los Angeles and New York to Chicago and Washington D.C. has its own tightly organized Russian community. Many of these communities boast Russian singles groups designed solely to pair up expat Ruskies in the States.

Ever since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the attendant demise of Communism, Russian populations have boomed throughout the world. One main reason for this uptick is that it became much easier for then-Soviets to travel abroad, something their government largely prohibited for the roughly 70 years leading up to that watershed. Nowadays, just as many Westerners are allowed into Russia as Russians are let out into the free world. All of this, of course, is good news for those seeking Russian singles.

Russian Singles and Identity

Much is made of this concept of identity, yet things remain muddled. Are foreigners emigrating to the States expected to adopt all the customs of their new home, retain the full suite of traditions from their homeland, or settle on some reasonable mix of the two? For a lot of Russians living in the States, the idea of keeping alive the Russian identity, for better or worse, is critical.

For that reason, lots of Russians are intent on meeting (and dating) fellow Russians, despite the pressure to assimilate. This is true of singles not just from Russia, but from any foreign country. Moreover, that pressure applies to Jewish singles, black singles, and other minorities in the U.S. as well.
