Classical GuitarsThe origins of classical guitars are not fully agreed upon. Some musical historians trace the instrument as far back as ancient Babylon, others to more recent times. What is agreed upon by experts though is that an instrument that is undoubtedly its immediate predecessor originated in Spain in the 16th century. The classical guitar has an impressive musical lineage. Influences on Classical GuitarsThe guitar that certainly evolved into the modern classical guitar had Spanish origins, but was no doubt influenced by other medieval European countries. One of the difficulties in pinpointing a precise place of origin is that the people using and modifying musical instruments were traveling groups of musicians called troubadours. These groups of nomads were responsible for popularizing and spreading guitar music across Europe. The Germans too had considerable influence over the evolution of classical guitars. The names of famous German guitar makers have come down to us through the centuries and their contributions shaped the development of guitar history. These famous German manufacturers were highly regarded for their excellent craftsmanship. Another important influence on the development of the guitar was in Italy. Italian guitarists pioneered different methods for playing the guitar that are roughly translated into English as "strumming" and "plucking." The physical construction and playing technique of classical guitars has been influenced by countries all across Europe for centuries. ![]() Get all Guitar articles via
