Artist Tapestry

by Patty Yu

Hanging an artist tapestry on the wall is one way to add aesthetic appeal to otherwise empty wall space. The meticulously woven details are sometimes quite astonishing, creating intricate imagery of all sorts. Tapestries commonly depict historical images, but you can always have a custom tapestry made for a specific architectural space, and depict any type of image you could imagine.

Artist Tapestry History

The artist tapestry holds a long, rich history in numerous cultures both ancient and modern. In ancient Egypt, people buried their dead wearing tapestry woven attire. Greek cultures covered walls with beautiful tapestries. During medieval times, French weavers made the craft more visible, and the Middle Ages saw artist tapestry pieces become valuable status symbols to the aristocracy.

Tapestries also provided practical usage, offering insulation in castles, covering door openings, and creating privacy around beds. Royal figures brought tapestries along during travels as comfort items and to establish prestige. After battles, woven artwork often changed hands, sometimes cut to fit new doors and window openings, or joined with other tapestries.

Throughout history, decorative art tapestries depicted many different images. They commonly recorded pieces of history, or made reference to historical events. Tapestries also document cultures, people, animals, and nature. Some tapestries are made with such delicate detail that they look incredibly realistic, similar to Trompe Loeil wall art. For example, tapestries woven to look like a window overlooking a beautiful garden scene.
