Black Cohosh Products

by Sarah Provost

Black Cohosh products are widely available for use in treating symptoms of menopause, particularly hot flashes. Black Cohosh is a member of the buttercup family. Its roots and rhizomes (thick underground stems) are the parts used for medicinal purposes. Black Cohosh products can vary widely in dosage, so be sure to consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare professional.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology guidelines on the use of botanicals supports the use of Black Cohosh for up to six months, especially in treating insomnia, mood disorders and hot flashes. The most commonly available standardized Black Cohosh product is Remifemin, which is produced as a pill or a tincture. The usual dosage is from 20 to 40 milligrams, twice daily.

Cautions Regarding the Use of Black Cohosh Products

Several cautions are appropriate when considering Black Cohosh products. First, be sure you buy them from a reliable source, as they are not regulated for safety, purity or effectiveness by the USDA, and some herbal products have been contaminated with toxic metals. Secondly, never confuse Black Cohosh with Blue Cohosh, an entirely different plant which can adversely affect the heart.

Never take Black Cohosh products if you have had breast cancer or are at high risk for breast cancer. Finally, consult your healthcare professional immediately if you experience a sudden lethargy, as there have been cases of autoimmune hepatitis occasioned by the use of Black Cohosh. Autoimmune hepatitis is a serious condition affecting liver function. When caught and treated, it is curable, but it can be fatal if left untreated.
