Land Management Software

by Nicholas Kamuda

Comprehensive land management software is important to many different kinds of businesses. Government offices can use it to regulate land development and disseminate property information throughout municipalities and regional organizations, and businesses can use to aid in their development and organize information regarding zoning regulations and contractors. Some NPOs and other government-subsidized organizations also use land management software to keep track of demographic information as well.

Since the early 1980s, the demand for customized software for special kinds of businesses has been growing steadily. Until the invention of the personal computer in the mid-1970s, it was cost-prohibitive for many small businesses and other organizations to use software to automate functions and processes. With the recent advances in connectivity and the widespread use of the Internet as a medium and business tool, many businesses may find it cost-prohibitive to not use comprehensive organizational software.

GIS and land management software has become a necessity in modern municipal planning. Many companies produce software that can be used to build as a complete record of land use and regulations, tracking everything from permits to law enforcement and storing blueprints, CAD files, photos, and relevant reports. Some companies will even build the software around the customer's needs, inputting the relevant codes and regulations to smooth the transition to a digital system.

Customizing Land Management Software

In some cases, such software can be used with other programs such as accounting programs or specialized demographic programs to increase functionality. By using GIS software with voter registration databases, for instance, demographic breakdowns and voter tracking maps become instantly accessible. Some land management software can also track fees and be combined with utility billing programs to generate concise, comprehensive records.
