Water And Sewer Billing

by Nicholas Kamuda

Many large municipalities have used automated water and sewer billing software for years. Some smaller cities, however, still process many utility billing functions by hand, or with a simple relational database program. By switching to a modern utility billing program, towns may enjoy more accurate billing histories, quicker and easier accounting, and a higher degree of efficiency.

Features of Water and Sewer Billing Software

Many current water and sewer billing software programs now include all of the functionality that was once limited to expensive, complex utility tracking software. Generally, the software will compile information from utility meters, payments, deposits, and other information and automatically produce reliable reports, print bills, and even issue work orders. Some software can be customized to the needs of any municipality, allowing users to factor special requirements such as bond issues into the process.

Such software automatically calculates and sorts many billing functions, and can be configured to support multiple districts and even sort bills by billing route. Often, users can use their choice of meter input and other input devices, including phone and radio read systems. In many cases, utility billing software also supports flat-rate systems.

Some manufacturers of water and sewer billing software allow their software to be directly connected to compatible accounting software, allowing for total automation of bill payments. Contemporary utility processing software may also allow customers the option of online payments, which post directly to the municipality's accounting ledger. Some software will also generate a comprehensive payment history that can be accessed at any time.
