Voter Registration Software

by Nicholas Kamuda

In recent years, many municipalities and local governments have been turning to voter registration software to help manage different registration and database functions. Many versions of that kind of demographic tracking software can be connected with Geographic Information Systems to catalog relevant data according to geographic location. Even small municipalities can use this method to produce voter demographic studies and organize detailed voter information.

In the most basic terms, voter registration software acts as a database for registered voters. Users can define voting districts, and determine whether or not they want the software to sort and maintain the data via district. In general, voter registration software can store voters' names, addresses, and affiliations.

Other Functions of Voter Registration Software

The districts can be defined by customized GIS software. GIS software often included detailed maps of a municipality's surrounding area, allowing users to define district boundaries and potentially create unlimited amounts of districts. In many cases, GIS software can also be used with many different kinds of accounting software to give municipalities control over other functions as well, such as utilities billing and permit fee processing.

Some manufacturers may also provide polling functionality in their voter tracking software. Commonly produced for larger municipalities and state use, polling functions can aid in turnout projections and other demographic studies. Some software that includes polling functions may also be compatible with GIS software.
