Disposable Air Filters

by Rachel Arieff

Disposable air filters are available from the manufacturers of air cleaning systems, as well as third-party filter providers. Many types of mechanical air cleaning systems depend on the use of air filters to purify indoor air. These air filters are designed using the latest technology, from diverse products such as foam, fiberglass, synthetic blends, or activated carbon.

The materials and manufacturing processes used will depend on the particular purpose of the filter. For example, a filter intended to remove particulate matter will be made of a different type of material than one designed for removing gaseous fumes. In the first case, the filter could be composed of foam, fiberglass, or synthetic materials.

Other Types of Disposable Air Filters

Chemical fumes are another problem altogether. Fumes are essentially gases, which are composed of smaller particles and thus require a different kind of filtering material. Activated carbon air filters deliver on this front. The carbon is specially treated to make it extremely effective in trapping harmful chemical gases that are often present in indoor air. Sometimes disposable air filters will be composed of a combination of particulate filter material and carbon material to perform on both fronts.

Quality air filters do an excellent job at purifying the air in your home or office. However, after a certain amount of time, they must be replaced. This usually runs around three months, but always double check with your system's instructions. One issue for owners of air filtration systems is where to get replacement disposable air filters. As stated above, you can always purchase from the company that manufactured the unit. However, a cheaper alternative, and one that could save you up to 50 percent, is to purchase identical filters from a third-party filter manufacturer.
