Speech Recognition Software

by Michael O'Brien

Speech recognition software is changing the lives of people no matter what their needs and capabilities may be. For handicapped people such as the sight impaired, it can allow these individuals to read and write on their computers through dictation and transcription. For others, it can make computer access faster and more convenient. Let's take a look at one of the chief factors in making this kind of technology an effective means of access.

Speech Recognition Software: Advanced Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a concept involving a computer's ability to think for itself. Unlike science fiction stories where computers gain emotional awareness and try to take over the world, real artificial intelligence is simply a tool that a computer uses to more easily and accurately perform its functions.

Whether we are aware of it or not, artificial intelligence technology is present in many applications we use on an everyday basis. Ever write in a word processing program like Microsoft Word and notice the way it auto corrects or underlines misspelled words? Ever play a video game and notice the way the characters seem to move and react to your actions? These are all examples of artificial intelligence at work.

Where speech recognition software utilizes this technology is in learning to understand the human voice. We all speak differently. In the past, in order for speech recognition software to understand someone, he or she had to speak very slowly and have perfect pronunciation. Today, such software learns to understand the individual speech patterns of a person to more accurately transcribe what is being said into written text, or to carry out commands. Adaptive artificial intelligence is the key to making it work.
