Wedding Invitation Reply Etiquette

by Kathleen Gagne

Learn About Wedding Invitation Reply Etiquette

Just like life, wedding invitations have become more complicated. When you receive one, it is often a fairly thick package containing the actual invitation and a number of other cards and inside envelopes that serve various purposes. You will have to do some reading. For example, you may be invited only to the wedding ceremony itself. Don't feel slighted; in many cases the couple has had to choose a limited number of family and friends to invite to the reception.

If you are from out of town, you will probably find a small card or a sheet of paper containing directions. You may also discover that the couple has recommended a local hotel and has included reservation information provided by the hotel. You may even find a card asking you whether you want chicken, beef, or fish. Obviously, you will have some decisions to make.

Today's Wedding Invitation Reply Etiquette

Today's wedding invitations can be very different from the bland, formal ones that were a must only a few decades ago. Many are designed by the couple to reflect their personalities, styles, and interests, or even to showcase a unique wedding. One thing about wedding invitation reply etiquette has not changed, however. It is still very important to follow reply instructions carefully and as quickly as possible.

It is especially critical to respond to reception invitations whether you will be able to attend or not. This is because the couple will be responsible for providing the caterer with a specific number of attendees several days before the wedding. Note that only the persons named on the envelope are actually invited. Some couples are now using alternative methods of guest management. Don't be surprised if you receive an invitation that asks you to respond online or by calling a toll-free number. Once you have committed to attending, only a very serious matter should interfere with those plans.
