Fire Department
Fire Department PatchesFire department patches are excellent alternatives to the hats and T-shirts that people wear to show their respect for and allegiance to fire departments around the country. Either firefighters are extremely brave or somewhat crazy. Entering a flaming structure is not everyone's notion of a good idea. Without people willing to do this work, our society would quickly be in shambles. Fire department patches are but one simple way to say a small thank you. Firefighting History and Fire Department PatchesIf you're going to wear fire department patches, you may want to know a thing or two about the history of the fire department, in case someone asks, or in case you feel like showing off to family or friends. The first American fire departments existed before America itself. In New Amsterdam, a massive volunteer force was put together long before that colony became New York City. In places like Philadelphia, Boston, and New York--all over the new colony--houses were built of wood. Inside, people kept fires lit around the clock for cooking and for heat. The result was, of course, burning houses. And in the cities, when one burned, most of the time many would. Bucket brigades were no match for the infernos that consumed New York, Boston, and Chicago with frightening regularity. Today, firefighting technology from the hook and ladder truck to oxygen tanks has helped firefighters get the upper hand on most fires. Still, as seen in California in recent years, when nature ignites, there is little firefighters can do. Southern California fires consumed hundreds of acres and cost many lives.
