Fire Department
Fire Department HatsFire department hats tell the world that you get it. Without firefighters, the place you live would quickly be up in flames. The men and women who fight fires ignore fundamental instincts and rush into burning buildings to save lives and property. Wearing fire department hats is the very least we can do to acknowledge their heroic efforts. Fire Department Hats and Fire Department HistoryIf you're going to don fire department hats, it might be nice to know a little something about fire department history. The earliest fire departments were volunteer forces. In the original American colonies, large forces were organized to combat the frequent blazes that erupted due to the fact that houses were made of wood and people kept flames lit inside them around the clock. Many decades later, the introduction of the steam engine helped pave the move from volunteer forces to paid departments. Volunteer brigades were reluctant to adopt the new technology. Partially in an effort to sidestep them, paid fire departments were formed. In many cases, brawls broke out between the old and new guard. Eventually, things settled down. With or without the steam engine, fires still regularly devastated American towns and cities. The most famous example is the Chicago fire of 1871, supposedly started when a cow kicked over a lantern, which burned acres of central Chicago, with an unthinkable cost in lives and property. Pay a small tribute to firefighters by wearing fire department gear, easily found with a few clicks of the mouse on the Internet. ![]() Get all Firefighters articles via
