Life Size Fire HydrantsLife size fire hydrants are a great decor addition for just about anywhere in the house. Life size fire hydrants serve not just as decoration, but also as containers. You can store anything inside them, use them as a trashcan, or as a drink cooler. A full-size plastic replica of the fire hydrants blocking parking spaces across your town or city, the hydrants are often used by real fireman for fundraising events, awards of recognition, or even for training exercises. Life Size Fire Hydrants and Hydrant HistoryOf course, firefighting predates the fire hydrant. But bringing buckets of water to calm a raging flame was rarely successful. Happily, the bucket brigade has faded to a memory usually only dredged up in cartoons. The first hydrants were cauldrons of water, placed strategically through towns or cities. They didn't pump water, but they made sure water was available nearby if something were to catch on fire. Even after the hydrants we know today came into use, underground cisterns containing water to be pumped on fires still continued being used in many places. In some places, cisterns are still the best available firefighting option. With the advent of the municipal water supply came the invention of the fire hydrant as we know it today. The look may have been different, but the function was the same. The first hydrant in pole form is believed to have been invented by Frederick Graff Sr. in 1801. Today, hydrants are everywhere, and with life size fire hydrants, they can be everywhere in your home as well. ![]() Get all Firefighters articles via
