Research Design Strategies

by Scott Martin

Research design strategies can be broken into two broad divisions: qualitative research and quantitative research. Ultimately, a statistician can aid you in determining which type of research design strategies are best for your field and particular study. From there, a statistician can aid you in the development of cost-effective strategies for data collection and analysis, built around theoretical or practical approaches.

Types of Research Used in Research Design Strategies

One type of research is qualitative research, which does not measure, count, or classify data. Instead, qualitative research attempts to use descriptive analyses to examine data. One way in which qualitative research accomplishes this goal is by analyzing nuances of language and behavior.

Quantitative research, on the other hand, focuses on numbers in order to explain the conclusions the given statistics lend themselves toward. The application of quantitative research occurs most often in the natural and social sciences. The collection of data occurs based on numbers, observations, or questionnaire responses.

For example, a study based on interviewing subjects regarding their alcohol consumption habits would be considered qualitative, because responses are detailed and unique linguistically, and are not represented by numbers. An example of quantitative research would be a scale-based questionnaire, where each response might be on a scale of 1 to 5, and could be assigned a numerical value and tallied. Dichotomous scales can assign a value of 1 or 0 to "yes-or-no" questions for quantitative research, as well. Research design strategies can be outlined by your statistician, to determine type of research, method, and skip patterns for questionnaires.
