Model Building

Model building is a way to quantitatively represent the relationships between parts of a system, process, or topical area. There are two main types of models--descriptive and predictive. A descriptive model design is used to help understand processes and behaviors. On the other hand, a predictive model is an attempt to foresee unknown values based upon known information.

Model Building in Science

Models are constructed and used by many different disciplines. In the natural sciences, models are often used to predict future occurrences. One of the most visible models has to do with weather predictions, such as hurricane warnings or anticipated rainfall.

In the social sciences, model designs are often used to describe and predict individual and group behavior. Model building is based around theoretical constructs that have observable indicators. These indicators are quantified and then entered into a statistical software package in order to test the relationship of variables in the model.

Models are a fundamental way of trying to understand the world and play an integral in science. Establishing sound theory based and testable models is critical in many research fields. A statistician can help with your model building and design effective ways to test it.
