Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins Complexes

by Beth Hrusch

Oligomeric proanthocyanidins complexes are bioflavanoids that act as free radical scavengers in the bodies of humans and animals. Since they were first discovered in the seeds and skins of grapes as well as in pine bark, they have been valued for their natural vasoprotective qualities. This means that they protect the blood vessels by strengthening them against disease. Their antioxidant qualities also make them useful in combating the effects of oxidation in the body, which is one of the main causes of aging.

Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins Complexes In Action

Oxidation is a process that occurs everywhere in nature. It is the primary cause of the cell degeneration that leads to aging. In the bodies of humans and animals, the causes of oxidation are environmental and metabolic. The toxins that bombard the body from outside sources combine with the natural results of cellular function to degrade the body on a cellular level.

The body has a built-in defense against the effects of oxidation. Antioxidants such as vitamins E and C neutralize free radicals, and can be added to the diet to assist the body's own processes. Research has found, however, that getting enough of these dietary antioxidants to fend off environmental toxins is difficult. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins complexes, with their antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties can be added to formulations that aim to fight diseases that are the effects of the oxidative process.

For humans and animals with joint disease, arteriosclerosis and heart disease, the protective qualities of oligomeric proanthocyanidins complexes offer hope for a better quality of life. By scavenging free radicals, strengthening the blood vessels and inhibiting inflammation that leads to swelling and pain, OPCs can be used to treat a variety of ailments related to the oxidative process. They are a natural way to defend the body against attack.
