Fewer Allergies

by Beth Hrusch

Fewer allergies mean less misery for pet owners and their dogs. Dogs suffer from allergies in the same ways that people do. Anyone who has experienced the symptoms of an allergic reaction can understand how a dog feels when he is going through it. Fortunately, allergies can be controlled or even avoided altogether with the use of antioxidant supplements.

Antioxidant Use Means Fewer Allergies

Allergies occur when the immune system encounters a foreign substance that it thinks might be harmful to the dog's body. In order to defend the body against attack it releases histamine, a chemical that causes tissues to swell and secretions to pour from mucous membranes. It serves an important function in alerting us to the problem. It also causes the symptoms that make allergies a misery.

How do antioxidants help achieve fewer allergies? One antioxidant in particular has proven to reduce the effects of histamine in the body. Oligomeric proanthocyanidin is a powerful naturally occurring chemical that inhibits the swelling caused by histamines. This anti-inflammatory quality makes it quite useful in the treatment of joint disorders, as well. OPCs can keep tissues from reacting to a potentially allergic substance.

Formulas are available for the control of allergies in dogs. Fewer allergies can mean the difference between limited participation in daily activities and a full, active life for your dog. That is why it is important to consider supplements that contain OPCs and other antioxidants. They can inhibit allergy symptoms and strengthen your dog against allergy-inducing substances.
