Herbal remedies for cancer fall into one of the five complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) groups for cancer therapy: biological, energy, alternative systems (traditional Chinese, for instance), physiological, and mind-body therapies. Herbal therapies for many illnesses and diseases are most closely associated with Chinese medicine, which has used plants to treat human beings for centuries. Even today, the Western medical establishment remains skeptical of such an approach to health concerns.

The point is always made by mainstream cancer organizations that quality and dosage are not regulated by the government, so these herbal compounds are not reliable. Any consumer should be aware of this problem and conduct careful research into the best products and herbal practitioners. Chinese herbal and acupuncture experts have established businesses across the country and have brought quite a different approach to medicine than Western minds are used to.

Many Herbal Remedies for Cancer

There are many plants and herbs that folk medicine--from Native American to traditional Chinese--has used for thousands of years to treat wounds, illnesses, and diseases. Some herbal cancer treatments are considered by advocates of alternative cancer remedies to be particularly effective in treating cancer. Their herbal remedies for cancer include Essiac tea, which has been around for decades, and contains burdock, Indian rhubarb, slippery elm, and sorrel, among other substances.

Graviola is derived from a tree in the Amazon rainforests and is touted as a killer of color cancer cells; so far, there is no anecdotal evidence about this herb. Artemesia (wormwood) is currently under study as a cancer therapy. Pau d'Arco is taken from the bark of a South American tree; red clover has been used for hundreds of years and contains four anti-tumor substances. Saw palmetto has gained attention lately as a treatment for prostate cancer. Tian Xian is a Chinese herbal treatment that is used to destroy cancer cells. Consumers should not attempt to self-medicate with herbal concoctions; only trained experts in herbal medicine should oversee the use of herbal remedies for cancer.
