Personal Security

by Jeremy Horelick

The personal security industry has taken off in recent years, thanks in part to new and better technologies that make looking after your safety easier than ever. In the past, you may have entrusted your personal security to your wits and strong vocal cords, both of which remain undeniable assets. But just because you can't lay claim to a shrill, deafening scream doesn't mean you must be an easy target for thieves and other attackers.

Even though there's no substitute for "street smarts" and good sense, incidents still occur, and not always in so-called "dangerous" parts of town. Moreover, not all crimes take place under veil of darkness, either. You may just as well be approached while jogging through the park in the middle of the day as you would entering your car in an underground garage after hours.

Be Smart about Personal Security

It's easy to look over newspaper headlines and tune into local broadcasts and determine that society has finally reached total moral decay. But this is clearly a gross oversimplification; there has always been crime in every society, from the most impoverished inner-city neighborhoods to the Amish farming communities of Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio.

Knowing this, your best tack is to remain smart about your personal security, and no, that doesn't mean racing out to apply for a handgun license. In addition to remaining vigilant whenever you are out, at any time of day, and in any company (or alone, naturally), there are a variety of personal security products as well as self-defense techniques that can empower you. Most of these devices and strategies are easy to master and require no real physical strength either.

Personal Security Tips

One of the keys to achieving a sense of calm is first realizing that no situation is entirely safe. Sure, some environments are less threatening than others, as anyone would agree, but you must eventually accept that a confrontation may occur anywhere, even inside your own home. Why would a stranger break into your modest home, swipe your goods, and threaten bodily harm, especially when there are bigger houses around that contain nicer things? The short answer is that criminals are actually very rarely complete strangers to their victims.

Before you open your rolodex and start leafing through in search of potential burglars, rapists, and murderers, consider this: a few simple tips can deter 90 percent of potential crimes. Don't walk alone at night, even in well-lit neighborhoods you know by heart. Don't call attention to yourself by wearing flashy clothing or jewelry. And don't wear headphones while you're out walking or running, as they can prevent your hearing a potential attacker coming up behind you. But for an added measure of personal security, consider carrying a pocket alarm, mace, or other personal safety devices.

More on Personal Security Products

Good personal security products can give you that added sense of confidence when you're out walking, shopping, or traveling to school or work. You have a life, and the last option is walling yourself up inside your home and refusing to enjoy it (your life, not your home). A personal alarm, which emits a screeching, blaring signal, a can of pepper spray, or even a Taser can free you up to live worry-free no matter where you are.

Once you've invested in a personal security product, of course, you shouldn't feel free to start taking risks you'd never have taken before. Ideally, you'll never deliberately put yourself in a situation where you're prone to attack. But if the unthinkable does happen, at least you'll know you're well armed to stave off your aggressor.
