Porsche EnginesPorsche engines have always been renowned for creating tremendous power in a relatively compact package. The secret to such excellent performance lies in the engineering and design that is the hallmark of Porsche sports cars. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche envisioned lightweight, precisely engineered cars as the solution to transportation problems. He designed the Volkswagen Beetle, which became the world's top-selling car of all time. Ferdinand's son Ferry Porsche designed the original 356 to include a four-cylinder engine derived from the Volkswagen unit. The Famous "Flat" Porsche EnginesPorsche engines really hit their stride with the distinct flat-6 design that lays out two banks of three cylinders apiece in horizontal opposition. This design gave the Porsche 911 a low center-of-gravity for excellent handling characteristics. The flat-6 or "boxer" engine is still used in Porsche 911 models today, although the engines have been water-cooled rather than air-cooled since the introduction of the 996 model in 1997. Porsche engines included the four-cylinder units found in the 924, 944, and 968 in the 70s, 80s, and 90s and the brawny V-8s in the 928 and now the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo sport utility. All of these Porsche engines offer decades of proven performance capabilities when given the proper care and attention. ![]() Get all Import Auto Parts articles via
