Fuchs Wheels

by Benjamin Messmer

Fuchs wheels are the distinctive one-piece alloy wheels originally fitted on the Porsche 911 in the 1960s. They offered both greater strength and substantial weight savings over conventional steel wheels. Fuchs wheels are crafted with five pronounced "spokes" and usually have five lug nuts visible on their exterior center section. They are usually found in monochromatic paint schemes, although some Fuchs wheels have impressive two-tone finishes.

The first 911 alloy wheel became available on the 1967 911S and was 4.5" wide. It was the same size and offset as the steel wheels then standard on Porsche models. It is unique, as no other Porsche wheel is painted like it with a dart of black from the lug hole to the cooling hole.

Many Names for Alloy Fuchs Wheels

These excellent wheels were originally referred to as "S" wheels. Later they were known as "Fox Head," "Daisy Spoke," "S package," and "Fuchs wheels." Now most people know them as Fuchs wheels even though many other styles were available from the Fuchs Forging company.

The size of Fuchs wheels soon became larger with 5.5" wide wheels on the 1968 model cars that were dipped in black paint. Fuchs wheels became available on many Porsches thereafter including the '80s 911 and 944 models. Owners who seek to restore or maintain authentic Porsche sports cars know that Fuchs wheels are the genuine article.
