Carrera PartsFamous victories in the great Mexican races of the 1950s created the Carrera parts of Porsche model names. Carrera Panamerica races were run in the early 1950s as the interstate highway system first opened in Mexico. The races were all-out and nearly rule-free 2000 mile events and were by many accounts more exciting than even the Mille Miglia in Italy. The Carrera Panamerica proved to be an important proving ground for development of many of the ideas that went into the 911. Porsche engineers and test drivers refined the excellent handling of the lightweight, rear-engine Porsche design with race versions of the 356. Production Porsches were dubbed Carreras in commemoration of Porsche's famous victories in Mexico. Carrera Parts Through the YearsCarrera Parts refer to components suitable for most later-model 911s. In the late 1980s the main 911 models were the Carrera 3.2, Targa, Cabriolet, and Turbo. For the major 1989 update of the 911, Porsche introduced the first four wheel drive 911, known as the "Carrera 4." The Carrera 4 has been a massive success, merging the fun, tail-happy handling characteristics of the 911 with the reassuring grip of an excellent limited-slip four wheel drive system. The rear-wheel powered 911 came to be known as the Carrera 2. The liquid-cooled 911 replacement, developed under the number 996, continues to use the Carrera 2 and 4 designations to this day. Carrera parts will clearly be in demand for years to come because automotive enthusiasts continue to buy and maintain their Porsche sports cars. Look for Carrera parts online from Porsche specialists who can provide new or reconditioned parts to suit your exact model Porsche Carrera. ![]() Get all Import Auto Parts articles via
