Sodium Bicarbonate

by Sarah Provost

Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, is a common household substance that has a surprising number of uses. It is a natural antacid, deodorizer and cleanser which is environmentally safe to use. Here are just a few of the many uses of sodium bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate absorbs odors in your refrigerator, cat litter box, laundry hamper, sneakers, camping equipment and diaper pail. Adding baking soda to your laundry detergent boosts its cleaning power. It can be used in place of harsh chemicals to scrub sinks, stovetops, bathtubs, etc. Sprinkle some in your hair and brush it out to absorb smoke or other odors; it also acts as a dry shampoo to remove excess oil.

Baking soda is an excellent antacid to relieve upset stomachs and to soothe colic in babies. Dip a moistened toothbrush into it to use as a dentifrice, then dissolve half a teaspoon in water for a mouthwash that neutralizes odors rather than covering them up. Make a paste of sodium bicarbonate and water and apply to insect bites, rashes and other skin irritations. For sunburn, add a handful of baking soda to your bathwater. It soothes and has a mild antiseptic action.

Sodium Bicarbonate as a Beauty Aid

Baking soda makes a convenient and inexpensive facial and body exfoliant. Put a tablespoon in your palm and add water a few drops at a time to make a paste. Apply to your skin with a light circular massaging motion, then rinse clean. Baking soda balances your skin's pH and leaves no gritty residue to clog pores. It is even used as the crystal component in microdermabrasion, where its light weight and antiseptic qualities result in little or no reddening of the skin.
