Pewter Dish

by Beth Hrusch

The addition of a pewter dish to the table setting makes an elegant statement about your good taste. Pewter has been gracing homes for centuries. Its understated good looks make it a favorite for everyday use as well as for display. But pewter is not just beautiful. It is a durable and practical metal, easy to work with and versatile for many functions.

The Pewter Dish and Other Tableware

Dishes made of pewter come in sizes to suit any function. A dish is essentially a shallow bowl, and a small one can be used to hold nuts and candy or condiments. These are delightful when embellished, a charming addition to the look of the table. Larger dishes sometimes come with lids for serving hot sides. A casserole is a good example of such a dish. A shallow vegetable serving dish can be handy for holding a smaller quantity of fruits or vegetables.

A charming little pewter dish called a porringer is a popular item that has been around for quite some time. This type of small bowl may have first been designed as a child's bowl, used to hold the morning porridge. It comes with either one or two looped handles on each side, most likely so that a small child could easily carry it. Today, this dish makes a wonderful display piece, but also a great candy dish. Of course, it still functions beautifully as baby's first bowl!

There is a wide variety to choose from when it comes to the pewter dish. Pewter retains its deep luster and silvery patina through years of use, giving it an appeal that transcends time. The choice of pewter for your dinnerware means that you are investing in a look that will never go out of style, and will be practical for many years of everyday use.
