Punch Bowl

by Beth Hrusch

When entertaining, there is no greater or more impressive presentation piece than the punch bowl. This grand serving bowl has always been the centerpiece of the spread, a work of art in itself. It can, of course, be made from a variety of materials. When the look desired is elegant yet understated, however, the natural choice is pewter. A pewter bowl will always be stylish, a reflection of your good taste and appreciation for quality.

The Handcrafted Pewter Punch Bowl

The classic pewter bowl is footed, with a large basin. Many designs are based on colonial American bowls. At that time, juice bowls were important parts of any gathering, where guests enjoyed fruit drinks and cider from the hostess's best tableware. This large bowl was accompanied by several small cups and, sometimes, by hooks that attach the cups to the side of the bowl.

A pewter punch bowl is unique in that it shines with a silvery luster that only pewter possesses. The main component of pewter is tin, which gives this metal alloy its distinctive silvery-grey luster. Tin is a durable yet soft metal that is easy to work, and pewter bowls can be embellished and etched with fine details by pewtersmiths who either pour the molten metal or form it on a lathe.

A centuries-old tradition of handcrafting makes pewter is an excellent choice for your next punch bowl. The classic styling and rich details found in pewter pieces set them apart from those made from other metals. Each piece is unique, and lends a formality to your next occasion that will allow you to entertain in style. The investment in pewter for the home is one that will yield returns for many years to come.
