Hilton Head Island Villas
Hilton Head Beach RentalsHilton Head beach rentals are just one option for accommodations on this little boot-shaped island off the South Carolina coast. Harbor views to the west offer the more spectacular sunsets. Villas overlooking the golf courses might afford you a better glimpse of wetlands or marsh wildlife, not to mention the lush sweep of championship fairways. Of course, given the 19 miles of wide sandy beaches, Hilton Head beach rentals do seem an obvious choice. About Hilton Head Beach RentalsThe bigger picture on Hilton Head beach rentals is the island itself. Shaped unmistakably like a boot, Hilton Head lies just off the shore of South Carolina's Low Country. Barely 12 miles long and five miles wide, the island stands tiptoe near the Georgia border. Appropriately enough, the bridge from the mainland--built only in 1956--comes across at the ankle. The circle of private, gated communities--some primarily residential and others less so--begins, technically, with the oldest, largest, and best-known. Sea Pines occupies the entire toe of the boot. At the very tip of Sea Pines you can see both Atlantic sunrises and Low Country sunsets equally well. Around the bottom of the boot to the sole are the 12 miles of Atlantic beaches, 19 if you include those of Sea Pines in the toe and Port Royal in the heel. Remember, while Hilton Head beaches are public up to the high water line, access to them is not necessarily so. Also remember that about 22 percent of Hilton Head's residential properties are designated as rental. That is, these gated communities are among your vacation spot options. Midway up the sole are the communities of Shipyard and Palmetto Dunes. At the heel of the boot is Port Royal. Between these communities are the five public beaches and independent beach resorts. At the ankle of the boot, facing the both the mainland and the Atlantic, is Hilton Head Plantation. ![]() Get all South Carolina Travel articles via
