Hilton Head Island Villas
Hilton Head House RentalsYour first step to making a decision about Hilton Head house rentals--now you know that it's high time you took the perfect vacation--is to get your bearings with the island itself. Then you'll be poised to research your options among Hilton Head house rentals. You may choose a rental within one of the landmark communities or outside them. A barrier island only 12 miles north to south and about five miles east to west, Hilton Head sits nestled close to South Carolina's coastline about 100 miles below Charleston. Its climate is semi-tropical, its vegetation lush, and its beauty unquestioned. Learning about Hilton Head House RentalsHilton Head is shaped remarkably like a boot, standing on tip-toe at an angle above the Georgia state border. The first bridge from the mainland was built in 1956 and comes in at the ankle. Almost cut in two by Broad Creek running west to east, Hilton Head is crisscrossed by lagoons and creeks and dotted with grasslands, saltwater marshes, and freshwater wetlands. The main highway is 278--named William Hilton Parkway for the sea captain who surveyed the island in 1663. It runs from the bridge, skirting the boot heel, down along the sole, and into the toe of the boot. A newer road was opened in 1999, designed to lift some of the burden from 278. It runs from the bridge down the center toward Broad Creek. In the toe of the boot, and encompassing all of it, is the oldest and largest of Hilton Head's planned and gated communities--Sea Pines. At the ankle are Windmill Harbour, Spanish Wells, and Indigo Run. Along the base of the Achilles tendon is Hilton Head Plantation. Encompassing the heel is Port Royal, where the largest naval battle of the Civil War was fought. At the center of the sole--along the 12 miles of Hilton Head's wide sandy beaches--are Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard. Whatever your choice among Hilton Head house rentals, you'll be conveniently near all Hilton Head has to offer. ![]() Get all South Carolina Travel articles via
