The main highway is 278--named William Hilton Parkway for the sea captain who surveyed the island in 1663. It runs from the bridge down the center toward Broad Creek.

In the toe of the boot, and encompassing all of it, is the oldest and largest of Hilton Head's planned and gated communities--Sea Pines. At the ankle are Windmill Harbour, Spanish Wells, and Indigo Run. Along the base of the Achilles tendon is Hilton Head Plantation. Encompassing the heel is Port Royal, where the largest naval battle of the Civil War was fought. At the center of the sole--along the 12 miles of Hilton Head's wide sandy beaches--are Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard.
