Hilton Head Beach Vacations

by Helen Glenn Court

Hilton Head beach vacations are popular among young and old for perfectly good reasons. Among other things, the boot-shaped island enjoys a semi-tropical climate year round and is flanked on three sides by 19 miles of wide sandy beaches. Its easy pace and gracious South Carolinian hospitality guarantee you a vacation to remember with a sigh and a smile for a long time to come.

What to Enjoy during Hilton Head Beach Vacations

At the top of many to-do lists on Hilton Head beach vacations is golf. The lush fairways of the island's 24 championship courses have been designed by master architects. Among them are Robert Trent Jones, Tom Fazio, and Jack Nicklaus. Four of the courses are also on the list of the nation's top 100. Whether you're a scratch player or a hacker, Hilton Head beach vacations calls for at least several rounds of golf.

Naturalists delight in the richness of Hilton Head. While they enjoy a leisurely walk along the 12 miles of Atlantic shoreline, they'll be keeping their eyes peeled for birds as they do. Hilton Head's sand dunes, formed as all are when beach sand collects among tidal flotsam, are a vital part of the ecosystem. The island's rich diversity of habitats includes saltwater marshes, freshwater wetlands, lagoons, and maritime forests. Wildlife include herons, alligator, loggerhead turtles, beaver, egrets, and more.

Fishing enthusiasts will delight in Hilton Head's marinas. Offshore fishing yields king mackerel, barracuda, amberjack, and Spanish mackerel, to name a few. The most sought-after by fly fishermen of Hilton Head are the red drum, but ladyfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel have also been caught. Fly fishing trips are typically limited to two anglers. Nearshore catch include black drum, sheepshead, flounder, small bluefish, and lemon shark.
