Mommy Jewelry

by Sarah Provost

"Mommy jewelry" is a phrase that describes a new style of jewelry for today's mothers. A gold locket with a photo inside is lovely and traditional, and the birthstone ring is deservedly a classic. But today's mom might prefer an ankle bracelet or a sleek contemporary pendant. There are a lot of clever, hip designs out there for young and young at heart mothers.

Mommy Jewelry: Birthstones

A favorite way of commemorating children is with their birthstones. Traditionally, these have been incorporated into rings or brooches, but there are some lively new designs available for those who want something different, such as a pacifier pendant, with a gold handle and the bulbous part made from the child's gem. There are baby shoe charms with birthstone bows, and little brimmed caps with a birthstone at the center. Even the more traditional pendants and rings are often set in newer, more contemporary styles.

Beaded name bracelets--and anklets--are also popular as mommy jewelry, and can be made from many different materials. Have them made with large beads for a single child, and finer beads to stack if you have several children. Charms in many different styles can be added to beaded bracelets to further personalize them.

There are some interesting variations on traditional lockets, as well. My favorite is a pink or black alligator-print leather bracelet with a silvery envelope attached. The envelope opens and can hold up to three engraved plates, with personalized messages for any occasion, or just because. If you're looking for a gift, check out mommy jewelry for something fresh and original.
