Marketing Plan Writing

by James Lyons

Marketing plan writing is a very involved process that requires a good bit of market research. The American Marketing Association defines marketing research as the systematic gathering, recording, and analyzing of data about problems relating to the marketing of goods and services. In other words, it's incredibly important to the success of a new or established business.

I think it's safe to say that people are fickle. Their tastes, needs, wants and desires change a little every day. As a result, market research isn't an exact science because it's dealing with people. For instance, I used to love watching sitcoms on television. Now I can't stand them. I used to like reality shows. Now I'm sick of them. My preferences for entertainment change every year.

Marketing Plan Writing Involves Research

Marketing plan writing is often a lengthy process because the data acquired through research isn't always cut and dry. Sometimes the information looks ambiguous and the answers aren't so apparent. Marketing plan writing often calls for interpretation on the part of the marketing plan writer. Those of you who thought the process was easy have never written a real marketing plan before.

Finding out what consumers want, and how to present it appealingly, drives the need for marketing research. For those starting a new business, marketing research can help minimize risk. You can develop a plan of action around your marketing research. The information you have from a year ago is probably not very useful today, especially if you are a small business. Solicit the help of others and put together a marketing plan.
