What DSL Internet service providers will give you over the 56K modem and dial-up connection you're still using access the Internet is a speedy connection and far quicker data transfer. Specifically, things will jump from moving at about 30 kilobits per second to about 768. Technically the numbers are 56 kilobits to about 1.2, but those numbers are maximum capacity, not realistic averages. The same is true with the radically higher speeds of fiber optic lines.

As DSL Internet service providers will tell you, to get DSL service, you do need to be within a few miles of a telephone switching station--specifically, 18,000 feet. The farther away you are, the slower the speed. Once you're connected via DSL, you might actually enjoy browsing the Internet. You might actually get some work done. There will be no more strumming your fingers on the desk waiting for a website to load, email to arrive, or file to download. Things happen quickly.

What's more, you can kiss the second telephone line goodbye. There's no need to keep it, after all, once you've resarched DSL internet service providers and hooked up with one. DSL (which stands for digital subscriber line) uses the same double-stranded copper analog telephone line you've long used for talking. No more getting off the computer to make or receive a call. That's a convenience!

The range of human voices in ordinary conversation fall within a frequency range of 0 to 3,400 hertz. Yet the telephone wire is capable of handling frequencies up to several million hertz. That's a lot of wasted frequency. Equipment sending digital data--rather than the analog of human voices--can share the wire and use the unused capacity. That's where DSL comes in. It's efficient as well as fast.
