Fluorescent Light Bulbs

by Ingrid Chen

Fluorescent light bulbs can be found in various spaces and situations. In the home, fluorescent bulbs are oftentimes found in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as garage and storage space. But most commonly one can find fluorescent lighting in stores and shops. Walk into most any department store and take a look above you; most likely there are multiple rows and columns of fluorescent lights.

Although incandescent light bulbs are more common and generally less expensive per bulb, the benefits of fluorescent light bulbs should make this type of bulb a consideration for lighting in the home and elsewhere. Most significantly, fluorescent lighting provides similar light quality as incandescent bulbs, using one-third less energy and lasting 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Moreover, fluorescent bulbs create much less heat than incandescent light bulbs, and are therefore safer to handle and easier to change quickly.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Adaptable to Many Spaces

A common thought amongst consumers is that fluorescent lighting is appropriate only for large, warehouse-like areas. Fluorescent light bulbs, however, can be used and adapted to many spaces, particularly residences. By varying the temperatures of fluorescent light bulbs, the shade and intensity of the light is changed between warm and cool light shades.

Warm light, which is lower in temperature than cool light, is appropriate for living spaces that require less intensity and more ambiance. Cool light is more intense because of its higher temperature, and is suitable for workspaces, garages and basements where sharper light is more effective and practical. Because of its adaptability, fluorescent lights can be used in most any circumstance and space.
