Light Bulbs
Lighting BallastsAny lamps that use gas discharge cannot be operated without their corresponding lighting ballasts. Lighting ballasts produce an initial high charge to set off the chemical reaction, and then control the electric current to maintain a safe and steady level of light discharge. They are what determine the voltage, amperage, and waveform of gas lighting bulbs. The two main categories of ballasts are electronic and magnetic. Electronic ballasts run more efficiently because of their high frequencies. Until 1991, magnetic ballasts were the primary type of ballast used for light fixtures in most buildings. But the change of federal energy efficiency standards in 1991 prohibited the manufacture and sales of magnetic ballasts, due to their higher rates of energy waste. Naturally, the energy efficient electronic ballasts became more widely available. Manufacturers have since then also developed an energy efficient magnetic ballast, about 10 percent more efficient than older ballasts. Improved Lighting Ballasts Means Improved LivingWith the use of electronic fluorescent lighting ballasts in replacement of magnetic, American households have saved a combined $5.1 billion in electricity costs, and prevented millions of tons of environmentally harmful emissions. Saving money and protecting precious resources is a priority among many consumers, and electronic ballasts have helped us step in a better direction. When it is time to replace your lighting ballasts, check to see what ballast you need to properly fit your lighting system, because each ballast is very specific to its corresponding bulb. Buy your ballasts from a retailer that specializes in lighting, as those specialty stores and online lighting stores in particular are likely to carry a wide array of ballasts, or can cater to your needs. ![]() Get all Home Lighting articles via
