Standing Sprays

by Charles Peacock

Standing sprays are a common type of flower arrangement. They are usually presented at funerals, and are designed to bring a bit of sunshine to these sad occasions. There are many types of standing sprays--they are available with many different varieties of flowers, and in all shapes and sizes. Choosing the right standing spray doesn't have to be difficult if you know what you're looking for.

Varieties of Standing Sprays

Standing sprays are basically an alternate choice to the standard funeral wreath. Unlike a wreath, which is usually made in a heart or circular shape, sprays have a slightly wilder, cascading look. This design can be quite beautiful when done right. A good design makes the flower arrangement look more natural, more alive, and more inspirational.

Standing sprays are usually constructed with several different types of flowers. Roses are the most common element in standing sprays, but they are not necessarily the only flowers you'll find. Carnations, daisies, and lavender all make lovely additions to funereal standing sprays.

It's also possible (and quite thoughtful) to include flowers in your display that the deceased was particularly fond of. If you weren't close enough to the deceased to know which flowers he or she preferred, you can always ask a relative. Sending an arrangement to the funeral full of these flowers can be a lovely and memorable tribute.
