Sun care products are an essential part of our lives, particularly if we're spending a lot of time out in the sun. Everyone is exposed to some sun in his or her daily life, but for those of us who work in the sun or choose to spend hours each day lounging around in it, it is important to protect ourselves. Finding and using the right sun care products can be a matter of life and death.

Choosing Sun Care Products

Never be too cautious when spending a lot of time in the sun. Many people (especially those with darker complexions) assume that they'll be fine spending hours in direct sunlight. The reality is that their chances for developing skin cancer are very high. Dangerous UV rays emitted by the sun can still penetrate the skin and cause problems, even if you're the tannest guy on the block.

There are many different varieties of sun care products. These products are tailored to people with different types of skin. The most common products are sun tan lotions that use the well-known SPF numbering system.

SPF stands for "sun protection factor." The number after SPF refers to how long it would take to burn protected skin compared to how long it would take to burn unprotected skin. For example, SPF 2 lotion will allow you to spend twice as much time in the sun without getting burned as you'd be able to without protection.
