Coir Door Mats

by Helen Glenn Court

Chances are good that if you're cleaning your shoes at someone's front door, you're doing so on any number of shapes of coir door mats. Coir--or coconut fiber--is a traditional material used in several rural cottage industries in India. As a fiber to clean dirt, mud, sand, or snow from the bottom of shoes and boots, it's remarkably effective. As a door mat, it's durable, long lasting, and a sign of quality.

About Coir Door Mats

Lying at the southernmost tip of India, the province or state of Kerala is the country's largest producer. It now accounts for about 75 percent of India's total coir yield. Producing coir from coconut takes some time. The first stage involves soaking coconut husks in water for about a month, then beating the softened husk to separate the fiber from the shell. The fiber is then woven into coir.

Various handicraft products are made of coir, as are dhurry rugs, carpets, and the coir door mats you're familiar with. It's an incredibly durable product and will last a long time indeed. Coir has been manufactured in the United States for more than 100 years, however, so you needn't travel half way around the world to find a wide variety of shapes, styles, and designs.

You might also want to think about customizing coir door mats, whether with your name or a design, or perhaps both. Perhaps you're thinking about a gift for a friend, first-time home buyer, new neighbor, or client. You can't do much better than a coir door mat if you're looking for a wonderful design touch and a note of distinction.
