Magnets - Industrial, Rare Earth and Neodymium

Magnets - Industrial, Rare Earth and Neodymium

by Stacy Chbosky

Magnets are as fascinating to us in our adulthood as they were when we were children. Perhaps you've seen those executive sculptures created from piles of small magnet chips. These sculptures are perfect for passing the time, or for aiding in deep thought. Meditating on these wonderful magnet sculptures frees the mind, allowing for breakthroughs of every sort. Keep one of these sculptures around if your job demands a high volume of "Eureka!" moments.

Rare earth magnets are truly fascinating, because they are so intensely powerful. In fact, these magnets will act on each other from a distance of 12 inches away! Rare earths are also sometimes known as NIBs, which is shorthand for their scientific name, Neodymium Iron Boron, or NdFeB.

If you are a creative person, you may want to create magnetic sculptures of your own. With a gentle touch and a good supply of uniquely shaped NIB magnets, you can create sculptures to give away as gifts, to decorate your office, or to decorate your home. You can even create sculptures to sell, at arts and crafts fairs, or over the Internet!

Handling Powerful Magnets with Care

Remember, a rare earth magnet is different from a plain old kitchen magnet. Nickel plated NIBs with a grade of N40 or higher are extremely strong. They must be treated with caution. Allowing these magnets to strike against each other with full impact may chip the nickel plating. NIB's should be handled by adults. If children want to experiment with them, it should be with adult supervision only.

NIBs should also be kept at least a foot away from products like computers, laptops, and credit cards. If you or someone in your home uses a pacemaker, talk to your doctor before purchasing a NIB sculpture or NIB components. Rare earths are a whole lot more powerful than any magnet you've encountered before.

NIBs are excellent in sculptures, arts, and crafts. They can also be marvelous teaching tools! If you are a science teacher, NIBs can help you create molecular models. Learning is easier when you can hold it in your hand. By creating models of molecules using rare earth magnetic discs, cubes, plates, spheres and rods, your students will enjoy learning like never before!

Magnets as Gifts

If you know someone who loves creating arts and crafts, pull her away from her scrapbook, and put her in front of a pile of NIBs! Creating magnetic sculptures is an inexpensive, soothing, and rewarding craft. You can find very interesting magnetic designs online, or you can create your own.

In fact, the Internet is an ideal place to buy all your magnetic supplies. Just make sure you buy your magnets from a reputable company which is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Make sure they have a good return policy in case you receive a broken or otherwise undesirable shipment. With so many good merchandisers out there, don't settle for anything less.
