Sicily VacationsSicily vacations have a great deal to offer anyone wanting to enjoy the warm Mediterranean sun on a relaxing island rich in history and hospitality. From the towering Mount Etna in the east along a ragged coastline to hilly vineyards, the island's diversity is as breathtaking as it is beautiful. But many more plan Sicily vacations than nature lovers and photographers. Invaded by conquerors for as long as history records, Sicily is rich in archaeological and architectural treasures. Everyone from the Phoenicians to the Carthaginians to the Moors to the Saracens have left their marks the length and breadth of Sicily. You'll find a Greek temple, Roman ruins, Gothic churches, and Norman castles. Sicily vacations also offer inviting Mediterranean beaches, hilly vineyards, ancient olive and orange groves, and numerous nature reserves. Among its surprises are the Nebrodi Mountains to the northeast, which the Greeks and Byzantines favored, and the basalt formations of the Alcantara Gorge, which shows wonderful how a volcano can influence the surrounding areas. The Madoni Mountains are especially majestic though they do not rise as high as the volcanic Mount Etna. Sicily Vacations: Food and DrinkLast but by no means least of what you'll enjoy in the wonderful Mediterranean sun is the diversity of Sicilian gastronomy. You'll learn during your vacation that the well-known veal Marsala is only scraping the surface of the regional cuisine. Traditional meat dishes are most often based on lamb or goat. Seafood--from eel to cod to shrimp to herring--is of course especially popular. Artichoke, eggplant, and garlic figure into many recipes. Pasta and olive oil play their parts as well. ![]() Get all European Travel articles via
