Lighting Control

by Charles Peacock

Lighting control used to mean physically flipping a switch on the light itself. The first major advancement in lighting control was wall-mounted switches, and innovations in this field basically stalled for a few decades. With a few small exceptions like "The Clapper" and touch-sensitive lamps, turning your lights on and off remained a rudimentary task.

The Present (and Future) of Lighting Control

With today's technology, the possibilities for lighting control are basically limitless. Gone are the days when softening the light in a room meant turning off a few lamps and lighting candles. Today, you can have complex integrated systems installed in your home that allow you to achieve a wide variety of lighting styles throughout the house, all with the touch of a button.

Integrated lighting systems offer a whole host of advantages. When your house's lighting is tied into a central lighting control system, you can adjust lighting anywhere in your house by using a single centralized control pad. You can even program systems like this to adjust your light for you--for instance, to have the lights come on right before you get home from work, and then dim later in the evening when you're getting ready for bed.

When your lighting system is tied into an internet connection, you can even control it from the Web. Forgot to turn your lights off when you went on vacation? No problem--just access your home's control website and adjust the lighting from thousands of miles away. There's never been a better or easier way to trick burglars into thinking that you're home when you're really not!
