Hawaii Vacation Rentals
Mauna Lani Golf CoursesThe two Mauna Lani golf courses are called the North and South Courses. These greens are some of the most popular and famous of all the Hawaiian golf courses. By the standards of some of the world's great courses they are relatively young. Both were created in 1981, when an existing course was split in two and both turned into regulation 18-hole courses. Each holds its own charms for the golf aficionado, and some say that no Hawaiian vacation would be complete without taking a turn on these beautiful and challenging greens. The Mauna Lani Golf Courses of the Big IslandLocated on the Kohala Coast, the Mauna Lani courses have their own distinct personalities. The North Course was built on a braided lava flow called pahoehoe, which has a peculiar look similar to twisted taffy. The rolling terrain and groves of towering kiawe trees make for a dramatic landscape perched on the ocean's edge. Its signature 17th hole is a challenge, requiring a drive from an elevated tee to a black lava-framed green. The South Course has been home to the Senior's Skins Game for over a decade, and boasts the most photographed hole in golf (the 15th). It is built on 16th century A'a lava, which has a rough, broken appearance that lends drama to this course. Golfers here often find that their concentration is sorely tested by the crashing surf and strong crosswinds that funnel through the cliffs. However, the South Course rewards those who brave her challenges with breathtaking mountain and ocean vistas. Both Mauna Lani golf courses leave big impressions on their visitors. Perched in a tropical setting of unsurpassed beauty and designed to challenge, the Mauna Lani golf courses rarely disappoint. Golfers from around the world gather here to play in some of the most awe-inspiring surroundings found anywhere. They are the Big Island's premier courses, cherished for their great natural beauty and tradition of excellence. ![]() Get all Hawaii Travel articles via
