Home theatre speaker systems vary as much as the places people call home. In fact, the space you have will very likely be as strong a deciding factor in what speaker system you buy as your preferences for sound quality. If you live in a small apartment and want huge sound, you may have to consider using high end headphones for some of your listening, but you can still browse home theatre speaker systems to make the most of your space as well as your music and movies.

Pre-Packaged Home Theatre Speaker Systems

For some people in a relatively small space or on a tight budget, a pre-packaged set of small speakers for surround sound is preferable to only two high end front speakers, though for others the opposite is the case. Many companies make sets of home theatre speaker systems scaled down to fit even a college dorm room or studio apartment. These can be relatively high quality speakers which come with a decent receiver, but you're likely to sacrifice some quality, especially in the accessories, such as wires.

You might want to consider other ways of saving money. For example, if you've read about 5.1 channel receivers, then you probably know that the .1 refers to a subwoofer, which is actually a sixth (and typically very expensive and space-consuming) speaker. You can certainly enjoy your audio system without this speaker for some time, which should begin to give you the idea for how to build a system over time.

Similarly, the fifth speaker is a center speaker, which essentially "picks up" the dialogue in movies or the vocals in music. While this does enhance the effects of surround sound, it doesn't actually add anything you aren't already getting from your other speakers. If you are forming your home theater system a piece or two at a time, there's a good chance that two (or maybe four) speakers will keep you happy for quite a while.
