Home Theatre Systems
Home Theatre Speaker WiresHome theatre speaker wires may not be the most glamorous part of your system, but they are one of its most important aspects. If you purchase a state of the art home theatre system but try to save money when it comes to cables, you will find that your system is not performing the way it allegedly should. While the best cables in the world won't improve the sound or visual qualities you experience beyond the optimal level of the pieces of equipment they connect, if your cables aren't at the performance level of the rest of the equipment you have, they will limit its performance severely. So, when purchasing home theatre speaker wires, you should look for several qualities that constitute optimal performance. First, you want to make sure that your wires have connectors which can be attached snugly to the input and output jacks on your components. Some systems, even good ones, use wires with no connectors. The owner is supposed to strip the rubber or plastic coating off the ends of the cables, exposing the actual metal wires, which are then inserted into the speakers and clamped in. This is not entirely reliable, however, and resultant problems with connectivity lead to significant static and disruption in the sound and picture. Important Qualities in Home Theatre Speaker WiresOptical digital cables are the most sensitive of all wires to disruptions from poor connectivity. A good, snug connector with 360 degrees of contact between connector and jack will ensure that as much signal as possible is passed along between your DVD player, the receiver, and the speakers. Equally important is the conductivity of the metals of which both the wires and the connector are made. Not every metal is equally suited to conducting electricity. Generally speaking, the better a metal is at conducting the electrical signals which carry sound and pictures, the more expensive it is to manufacture and use than the metals used in cheaper wires. A more expensive metal like silver, at a smaller gauge (greater thickness), will be the most effective, and well worth the extra investment in home theatre speaker wires. ![]() Get all Home Theater articles via
