Satellite Radio Systems

by Serena Berger

The appeal of satellite radio systems stems from the desire to have uninterrupted music or news all the time, essentially allowing you to listen to what you want when you want. For travelers on the road, this means not having to change the station or encountering patches where there is no reception. Regardless of which provider you choose, satellite radio, delivering near CD-quality music, outweighs conventional radio for convenience and quality.

Unbeknownst to most consumers, satellite radio systems are more than ten years in the making, as the FCC allocated radio frequencies for digital audio radio service that long ago. In 1997, licenses were granted to two companies, now called XM Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio, which are the two main providers of satellite radio service. While satellite radio will not allow listeners to pick up local stations, both providers have access to several stations to provide news as well as music of multiple genres, drawing analogies to the distinction between local television service and cable television.

Hardware of Satellite Radio Systems

To receive satellite radio, you will need to pick a provider and a receiver, which often go hand in hand, as receivers may only be compatible with one service provider. Some receivers can be moved from the car to the home, allowing users to purchase a single product for use wherever they will be. There are also receivers that can be connected to computers or boom boxes, as well as to existing car stereo systems, allowing you to receive not only the local stations, but also uninterrupted satellite service.

Satellite radio systems are becoming increasingly popular as people are more willing to pay for the convenience of commercial-free music. Whether it's worth the monthly cost will be determined by your listening habits as well as how much value you place on a constant flow of music. This may be the easiest solution to making your morning commute a little bit more pleasant, as well as eliminating the hassle of scanning stations to find a song that you like.
