Job Search Sites

by Jeremy Horelick

Proponents of online job search sites point to their ease of use, convenience, and wealth of information as their major selling points. Why, they ask, should you bother clipping and circling print ads in a local newspaper when the employers you most want to work for are recruiting their personnel online? Sure, there are still jobs available through the classifieds section of your city paper, but their choices tend to be far more limited.

Open your newspaper and you'll see literally hundreds of ads for receptionist jobs, telemarketing gigs, and nebulous "make-your-millions-from-home" opportunities. There are also enough trucking, plumbing, and electrician jobs to last a lifetime, which is great for the technically or vocationally inclined. If, however, you're looking for management jobs and high-salaried spots at multinational corporations, job search sites are the preferred route.

The Advantage of Job Search Sites

One reason job search sites are the place to turn for the aforementioned types of roles is a matter of technology. Employers who are hiring for lucrative management gigs in the corporate world are generally searching for candidates with strong computer skills among other things. While there are certainly tech-savvy types cruising the employment sections of their papers, the reverse is not true; the Luddites of the world aren't scanning online job boards for their next position.

Job search sites then are a sort of filter for executives looking to hire. Once they're online and nosing around, there are other types of filters that play just as important a role, such as salary requests, degree requirements, and advanced skills, all of which you as the applicant may specify. If you're tempted to plump up your resume to make yourself more saleable, bear in mind that eventually you'll have to meet your prospective boss face to face and sell yourself and your skills in person.
