Girls Hair Accessories

by Ingrid Chen

When it comes to dressing up for formal occasions and everyday wear alike, using girls' hair accessories can add a special touch to the outfit. As a young girl, I remember how unique I felt simply by wearing a colorful hair band or a cute barrette. Not only was it a source of pride, but fashion trends may have called for a new type of hair tie or clip.

A typical hair accessory is the elastic hair band. It may be worn for utilitarian purposes, such as to pull hair out of ones eyes. The elastic hair band might also be dressed up with ribbons, fabric or marble-shaped balls to add color and flair. Another typical accessory a girl might wear is the hair clip. It can be used to hold hair back from one's face, or for decorative purposes. Girls often choose to wear clips because they can be easily adorned with almost anything, from ribbons to flowers.

Trends in Girls' Hair Accessories

Back in my childhood, "scrunchies" were particularly popular for everyday wear. The bigger the hair tie, the better the look. Also in style were rigid, fabric-covered headbands, sometimes worn behind bangs. Nowadays, due to popular TV shows or singers, items such as flower clips or even scarves have become the new trend in girls' hair accessories.

Hair accessories can complement daily wear or special occasions. For special occasions, girls' hair accessories may include veils, clips and hair bands made to add elegance to a dress. For example, girls sometimes wear veils as the tradition for the first communion. Flower girls might also add clips and ribbons to enhance the look for a wedding.
