Girls' Party Dresses

by Ingrid Chen

The styles of modern girls' party dresses range so greatly that it is nearly impossible not to find the kind of dress you want for the special occasion. One can find as many modest, simple dresses as dramatic dresses that bell out with layers of tulle or organza. Conservative or not, party dresses are oftentimes trimmed with some adornment, such as lace and ribbon, or even details as simple as collars and short bell sleeves.

Girls' Party Dresses: Going Retro

It seems, however, that young girls' party dresses now tend to evoke the essence of a mid-20th century style and feel. Harkening back to the era of poodle skirts and hula hoops, the style of party dress for young girls is remarkably familiar in many minds, especially those from that generation. Seeing a young girl now in vintage wear is a delight for many.

Bell-like in shape, these dresses are oftentimes a simple, sleeveless or short-sleeved bodice with a belled-out skirt, and a colorful sash around the waist. The skirt might start high, at an empire waist, or sit regularly above the child's hips. Just as a mid-century party dress might have, girls' party dresses might be accompanied by a light cardigan as well.

This old-school style of dress is a flattering and adorable style for young girls. The trend might also be due to American fashion's general tendency to shift towards past eras of apparel. Adults might even want their girls to take on a similar look as the favorite ones they remember. The retro look of the party dress feels fun and fashionable, and at the same time is entirely adorable.
