Mercer Island Homes For Sale

by Helen Glenn Court

Anyone searching for desirable property in Puget Sound is bound to pause to look at Mercer Island homes for sale. The island's 6.4 square miles, after all, have long been appreciated for the beauty of the rolling terrain, woodlands, and many spectacular views of Lake Washington. Reached only by ferry until the first floating concrete bridge was completed in 1940, Mercer Island homes for sale are now equally convenient to downtown Seattle (a 10-minute commute) and Bellevue (a five-minute trip).

Home to many of Seattle's most affluent residents, Mercer Island (population 8,400, median age 44) is an ideal place to live if you're raising a family. Its especially strong educational system offers both public and private schools, and is renowned across the Puget Sound area and statewide. Approximately 70 percent of adults over 25 have a college degree or higher, and 31 percent have either a graduate or professional degree.

With 475 acres of public parks and the surrounding quiet of Lake Washington, Mercer Island homes for sale offer prospective residents a quiet and beautiful retreat from the faster urban pace of nearby cities. Incorporated itself as a city in 1960, Mercer Island is in fact almost exclusively residential. Its shops, restaurants, and business district are concentrated at the north end of the island, as are the few apartment and condominium properties you'll find on the island.

The Northwest Multiple Listing Service indicates an average price of about $1.6 million for a single-family home and about $325,000 for a condominium.
